Which Airport for Gstaad: Malpensa, Geneva or Bern?
Geneva is the closest major airport to Gstaad, about 2 hours by car; Bern and Sion are closer but have few scheduled flights, and Zurich is about 2 h 45. Milan Malpensa is about 4 h 15. Malpensa makes sense when your long-haul flight lands in Milan, when you combine Switzerland with Milan or Lake Como, or when there is no convenient connection to Geneva. Gstaad Airport in Saanen takes private aircraft only.
The Simplon, the Col des Mosses and the Swiss Border
From Milan we cross into Switzerland at Gondo and drive over the Simplon Pass, which is kept open all year, then along the Rhône valley motorway to Aigle and over the Col des Mosses, also open in winter. The alternative via the Lötschberg car train from Goppenstein to Kandersteg is shorter on the map but depends on the train timetable, and its ticket is not included. Switzerland is in the Schengen area but not in the EU, so customs checks can happen and every passenger needs a valid passport or national ID card.
Practical Tips: High Season, Ski Bags and the Drive Back
Between Christmas and New Year and in February Gstaad is at its busiest, so book early and tell us how many ski bags you travel with. For an afternoon flight from Malpensa, we usually suggest leaving Gstaad about seven hours before take-off.
